I GUESS I WASN’T THE ONLY ONE WHO FELT THAT anticipation. We formed up and moved toward our staging area behind the perimeter, and it felt as if we were marching more quickly than usual. We had a few minutes to wait when we got to our jump-off positions. It wasn’t quite dark enough for us to attempt moving through the perimeter into no-man’s-land. We would exfiltrate a platoon at a time, then regroup once we were far enough out.

Unusual for Ranger Battalion, we would be operating as a unified company, rather than as independent spec ops squads or platoons. It would be up to us to hit the right flank of the enemy unit that General Chop and his staff had marked for destruction. Our battalion’s A Company would target the other flank. We were to hold the enemy in place and try to get far enough out to keep them from simply retreating south to escape. Heavy-weapons battalion would contribute to that as well, putting enough fire into the area at their rear to make it too risky for them to attempt.

It was a nice plan—on paper. If everything went exactly according to the plan, that enemy-reinforced battalion shouldn’t have a prayer. But nothing ever goes perfectly in combat, and the enemy probably had pretty plans on paper as well.
